Windows 8.1 Update 1 will be officially called «Windows Feature Pack»
We already know that Microsoft is preparing a major update for Windows 8.1 at the end of February the company has confirmed it officially, and before many of us were even able to install the preview builds of this update. The only thing we still don’t know is how officially will be called the update. Now, we know this.
Leak the RTM version of the update suggests that the final name of Windows 8.1 Update 1 will be «Windows Feature Pack» (or «the Package of new functions»). The name can be seen in the query window installation that will be displayed to users who decided to install the update manually.
Functional update to Windows 8.1 mainly adds improvements for desktop users, so the name «Windows Feature Pack» is quite logical, as the update does not include any changes to the operating system kernel.
Windows 8.1 update will be launched on April 8, while developers with MSDN subscriptions will be able to download it already 2 APR. But if you do not consider yourself among the patient users, the RTM version of the update you can download now. On MDL Forums now posted direct links to the update for all three architectures (x86, x64, ARM), but I recommend you to wait for the official launch. However, if you decide to install the update now, create at least a system restore point to undo changes if something goes wrong.
