Why you should start using Wi-Fi 5 GHz

One of the main reasons why today Wi-Fi is the most widespread wireless standard, is that this standard is a fast, reliable and very easy to use.

When the first commercial Wi-Fi devices started appearing in the late 90-ies of the last century, most of the users could choose between the two major versions of the IEEE 802.11 Protocol: a and b. Because the second was more accessible with the price point of view, it gradually turned into a mass standard. And as for the transmission of information uses a frequency band of 2.4 GHz, a significant part of the Wi-Fi devices today rely on it.

At the dawn of the mobile revolution, it wasn’t a big problem, as most of the houses rarely had more than one or two Wi-Fi devices. However, over the last decade, the situation has changed cutting. Today our homes and apartments «densely populated» laptops, tablets, mobile phones, digital cameras, and much of it relies on the good old 2.4 GHz. Moreover, the number of household electrical appliances such as microwave ovens, and many peripherals such as wireless mouse and keyboard, also use this frequency range. It also relies the next most common wireless, consumer standard – Bluetooth.

The more devices simultaneously use the same frequency for communication, the more they interfere with each other. The reason for this phenomenon is called «interference», which degrades the signal quality and leads to connectivity problems and reduced speed of information transfer.

In an attempt to solve this problem the Wi-Fi Alliance (a commercial organization that tests and certifies equipment according to the standards of 802.11 series) introduced a new frequency range to 5 GHz. He first became a part of the n versions of the Protocol, but was introduced as an option. In other words, certified 802.11 n device can operate either in the 2.4 GHz range, or may be dual-band, i.e., support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

However, with the latest version of the standard – ac – all certified devices must only support the new frequency band, that is, any wireless product that bears the notation 802.11 ac should use a working range of 5 GHz.

Why you should start using Wi-Fi 5 GHz

Since it is available relatively recently (revision of 802.11 n was officially released in 2009), 5 GHz range is still relatively small. This means that even in a «crowded» wireless home or office using the 5 GHz band guarantees a minimum of interference and maximum quality (speed plus stability) Wi-Fi connection.

Of course, both linked devices must support such a connection. In other words, to maintain the appropriate version of the 802.11 standard, which provides connection to 5 GHz, should the wireless router used to broadcast Wi-Fi signal and Wi-Fi module of the device.

This is usually enough to read the user manual of the router or check the model specifications on the official website of the manufacturer. Alternatively, you can open the panel with the settings of the router and check the supported frequencies there. This is usually done by typing a certain address into the browser. But even if the 5 GHz frequency range supported by your router, to take advantage of its benefits, the wireless module of your device also needs to support it.

The features of the 5 GHz band

Devices of this class usually use n-version of the 802.11 Protocol, and most importantly, offer the opportunity for simultaneous signal transmission in widely used and the mass range of 2.4 GHz and the new 5GHz. That is, they provide backward compatibility with older Wi-Fi devices. If your router supports 5GHz, then any 2.4 GHz compatible device just can’t work with him.

But what to do when your router supports 5 GHz, and the laptop/tablet is not? In such cases, you can purchase an optional Wi-Fi adapter. Fortunately, such devices are not very expensive, and most of them are extremely compact. The only disadvantage associated with the use of this adapter is that it will take one of the USB ports of your computer.
