(Updated: not just in China) In China upgrade to Windows 10 will be free even for users of pirated copies
Microsoft is preparing to make its biggest step in the Chinese market, which is known for high levels of piracy: the company will offer a free upgrade to Windows 10 to all Windows users, regardless of whether they use the original copies of the software or not.
Terry Myerson, the control unit «Operating Systems» at Microsoft, announced the plan during a tech conference, WinHEC, which takes place in Shenzhen, China.
This is an unprecedented experience for Microsoft’s integration of legitimate versions of its software in the hundreds of millions of devices Windows users in the Asian country. Recent studies show that three quarters of all software on PCs in China is pirated.
Previously, it was expected that the new version of the operating system will be released in autumn, but today the company announced that Windows 10 will be launched worldwide this summer, without specifying the exact timing.
Update 19/03: Microsoft has confirmed to ZDNet that free upgrade to Windows 10 to all compatible computers, even running counterfeit copies of Windows will be used throughout the world. The company enters a new business model that is not based on fees for licensing of the platform. Instead, the company will focus on making a profit through a variety of services such as Office 365 and others. For the success of this model, it is very important that all users use one platform version, which will be constantly updated.
