Quick Crypt: encrypt individual files in Windows 7/8
Older versions of Windows, including «dead» Windows XP lost system disk encryption, so users had to use programs from third-party developers to have the ability to encrypt in Windows. The situation changed with the advent of BitLocker Drive Encryption in Vista, which then migrated to Windows 7 and 8.
Despite the fact that the BitLocker feature is very easy to use, Microsoft somehow decided that it should be available in separate editions of the OS. Thus, in the case of Windows Vista and 7 encryption is only available in the Enterprise edition and Ultimate. Similarly, the encryption feature is only in professional and enterprise editions of Windows 8/8.1. Another drawback of the function in that it allows you to encrypt the drive. In other words, with BitLocker you can encrypt individual files.
If you are using a version of Windows with BitLocker, or you just want to encrypt one file, there is a free tool which will help you with this. We are talking about Quick Crypt. Is a free utility designed to encrypt individual files.
Interface Quick Crypt is very simple, and to use this tool is as simple as any other software to protect folders with a password, for example. Just launch Quick Crypt, click on the button with the magnifying glass icon, choose the file you want to encrypt; then enter the password (and password hint if needed) and press «Encrypt File». Quick Crypt supports 256-bit AES encryption, which should be enough for most users.
According to the developer, the tool saves the password hint, file owner name and comment in the encrypted file cannot be decrypted on another computer because the encryption uses the unique ID of the computer.
Quick Crypt is a portable program, which means that it does not require installation, and you can easily carry it on a flash drive. Moreover, the program size is less than 125 KB in size! But keep in mind that Quick Crypt on the Windows 7 computer, you must have an installed NET Framework 4.5.
If you found this tool useful, I have one little tip that will make it even more useful. Launch Quick Crypt, open the «Tools» menu and choose «Create shortcut in Send To folder». After these actions, Quick Crypt will appear in the «send to» context menu so you had the opportunity to run the program by clicking right mouse button on the file you want to encrypt.
