Pokki for Windows 8 with new light theme and other innovations
The first thing you will notice after you transition to Windows 8 is the lack of the familiar «start menu», which place came the start screen. And although the new menu looks pretty good, many users find it non-intuitive compared to the classical menu «start».
In November 2012, we wrote briefly about the application Pokki for Windows 8, whose main goal is to return the «start menu». In addition, Pokki allows you to install lots of useful web applications.
Recently the app was updated to a new version that brings new features, including a new light theme and the ability to use the Windows logo as the icon to open the menu.
The first change that catches the eye – «fresh» appearance. New light theme looks, to put it mildly, a charming but dark if you like it you can enable in the Settings menu. The rest of the design remained almost unchanged.
Notifications of apps like Facebook or Twitter, is now available from the drop down menu in the upper right corner. Was also redesigned search function, which, according to developers, works faster and more accurately.
Using the previous version, I was very disappointed that Pokki does not allow you to add shortcuts to the Favorites list (favorites). In this update, the issue was resolved – you can now add any file or folder on the menu Pokki. To do this, click the right mouse button on the element you want to add in the context menu choose Add to Pokki Menu.
Previously the menu All Apps were displayed only shortcuts to executables, thereby limiting the functionality of this menu in comparison to the list of «All programs» in «start menu» in Windows 7. Update corrected this deficiency and now in the All Apps menu shortcuts for all entries, including executable files, folders and any other file types.
Changes were made to the application settings panel. You can now set the Windows logo as the logo button to open the menu. There was also a new option of Sidebar Shortcuts, allowing you to add or remove various shortcuts from the sidebar menu. Finally, the settings allow you to make a choice between the old dark and the new light themes.
In addition to the new features and enhancements, the update has fixed some bugs. Full list of changes and bug fixes can be seen on the page with the press release. There you can download a new version of Pokki which works on all versions of Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8, but replacing the start menu is available only in Windows 8.
