New requirements open the door for 7″ tablets with Windows 8
Microsoft quietly changed the requirements for certification with Windows 8 tablets from OEMs, reducing mandatory minimum resolution from 1366 x 768 to 1024 x 768 pixels.
The change opens the door for market launch 7 inch Windows tablets that can compete with Apple’s iPad mini and a huge number of tablets. In addition, this change will allow Windows 8 tablets to be in the lower price segment, where the company from Redmond is currently non-existent. Probably, it will happen with the release of Windows Blue.
Meanwhile, Microsoft said that the new requirements come at a cost. On tablets with a display resolution of at least 1366 x 768 pixels, it will be impossible to visualize simultaneously two Windows Store apps by using Snap View, and the company expects that the manufacturers will explain this limitation to consumers. The software giant also emphasizes that in no way encourages its partners to the frequent use of the new options, but only gives them the opportunity to «study design for specific markets.»
