NeoKylin is a Chinese replacement Windows inspired XP
It is no secret that when Microsoft ended support for Windows XP, many governments, particularly the government of China is at a crossroads: upgrade to Windows 8 or 7 or to seek alternative and potentially cheaper solutions.
NeoKylin is one of the solutions found by the Chinese government for a way out of this impasse: this OS, which was «made in China», local authorities have been promoting as an alternative to Windows XP. The last word despite end of support, still very widespread in China. Against this background it is not surprising that the appearance and functionality of NeoKylin in many respects very similar to those in Windows XP. Interface elements are almost the same (from the login screen and icons to the menu «start»); even the names of the individual elements the same.
Significant differences, however, are under the shell system, as evidenced by the presence of the Unix terminal, which shows the true soul of the operating system NeoKylin. It is not clear which distribution of Linux was taken as a basis for developers NeoKylin, but the correspondent of the publication Quartz has taken the liberty to assume that this is Fedora, given the presence of the Yum (yellow dog Updater Modified), which, as a rule, is part of this distribution.
The operating system is equipped with several pre-installed programs, including Neoshine office Suite (perhaps based on the code of OpenOffice), but installing third-party applications is prohibited. For example, Google Chrome system is blocked. The situation is similar with other applications.
Contrary to what NeoKylin was originally created for the government sector, the operating system began to gain a foothold outside of the state institutions of populous Asian countries-for example, over 40% of the computers sold by Dell in China, are running NeoKylin. The Chinese Dell website confirms that some models are equipped with NeoKylin initially. As noted in the same company, Chinese OS available on business laptops, Dell Latitude, desktop Dell OptiPlex workstations and Dell Precision.
