Microsoft has released a tool that will prepare your PC with Windows 7/8.1 update to Windows 10 Consumer Preview through Windows Update
Microsoft plans to release the next test build of Windows 10 (Consumer Preview or the January Technical Preview) to the third or fourth week of January 2015, Consumer Preview will include many changes and new features in addition to those we have already seen in the officially released builds of 9841 and 9879.
When the company will release a Consumer Preview users of Windows 10 build 9879, you will be able to upgrade to the latest build, retaining all your data and installed programs.
Users who want to perform a clean install, MS will offer an ISO image. With it users can install the Consumer Preview on a virtual machine or create a bootable media to install Windows 10 CP on a real system.
For Windows 7 users and Windows 8.1 who would like to upgrade your current system to the January build of Windows 10, the company has already released a free tool that will bring new Assembly in the form of automatic updates when it is released. In other words, if you are using Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you can easily install the update to Windows 10 CP via «Windows update», ie as any other updates that Microsoft releases via Windows Update.
You just need to download and run a small utility called the Prepare This PC for Windows7/Windows 8.1. When the tool starts you will see a window like the screenshot below in which you need to click on the «OK»button.
However, we do not recommend you to update your current installation of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 Preview, because then you will not be able to go back to Windows 7/8.1 without reinstalling the system.
If you’re excited about Windows 10 and want to try out a preliminary version, better install the OS on the virtual machine or next to an existing Windows 7/8.1. Good luck!
