MEGASync: the official MEGA client for Windows with the ability to sync multiple local folders (updated: this is an unofficial client)
At the beginning of this year, Kim Dotcom unveiled a new cloud storage MEGA, which is also called rising from the ashes Megaupload – the once popular file sharing service that made a lot of noise after its forced shutdown by authorities due to copyright infringement. Since then, MEGA has gained worldwide popularity and the increasing number of users of this service are truly impressive, to say the least.
Update: it Turns out That MegaSync is not an official client created by Mega.co.nz. Company Mega confirmed this by email. However, MegaSync works perfectly, so you can use it until the official app.
In addition to its intuitive web-based dashboard, MEGA also offers an official client for Android which allows you to view files and to upload and download directly to the device. However, the company’s acting kind of secretive on the details regarding the client for Windows. We didn’t even developed an app or not. But now things have changed and first beta release of MEGA for Windows has finally emerged, although the company has not yet announced it officially. However, the app was named MEGASync.
Being in beta, MEGASync app is certainly not without flaws and problems, but, despite this, it works absolutely flawless when syncing all types of files between your computer and cloud storage MEGA.
After completing the installation the installation wizard will guide you through the process of setting MEGASync, which begins with logging in to your account or create a new account, and ends with the selection of folders to synchronize files between your computer and the cloud. By default, the app creates a folder «MEGA» on the computer and the folder «Windows Sync» in the cloud.
During testing I noticed that the registration function is not working yet, so a new user can’t to use the web site service to create a new account.
After configuring the account, MEGASync begins to run in the background, in system tray icon application that allows you to access the settings window. This window contains several tabs, including General, Account, Syncs, Bandwidth and Proxies. As well as SkyDrive or Dropbox, MEGASync creates on the PC in a special folder that is automatically synchronized with cloud storage. Of course, MEGASync is available all the basic functions, including checking the remaining cloud space and a limit on bandwidth usage.
Unlike competitors, MEGASync is able to synchronize multiple folders, which can be located anywhere in the local store. For each local folder you want to associate with a specific «node» (node) in the cloud. Folders and nodes may be added on the tab Syncs – you just need to specify a folder on your computer and folder in the cloud (host).
MEGASync works great even in its current beta state, and during my testing I have not found any problems at all (except for the not working registration function). The application works on Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8 and you can download it from the link below.
