Increase disk space of virtual machine on Hyper-V
In the process of creating virtual machines on Hyper-V at some stage, the hypervisor provides for the connection of the virtual hard disk. If you connect a new hard drive, the default is to create it with the size of 127 GB. If you select a fixed disk volume 127 gigabytes may be too much if it is only on testing versions of Windows. Another thing – the virtual hard disk is dynamic type. Even if the virtual machine is created purely for research purposes, don’t scrimp when defining a volume on a dynamic disk. Because the latter is on the physical disk only the space, which is filled with data of the virtual machine. But even if you originally created a virtual hard disk with a small volume, and subsequently there was a need to expand the space of the virtual machine, it is solved very simply. In the Arsenal of Hyper-V includes a tool for increasing the amount of disks of virtual machines. And it works without harming any of the guest OS or its data.
How to increase disk space of virtual machine on Hyper-V – detailed look below.
1. Increase VM disk Hyper-V
Turn off the virtual machine disk space which needs to be increased. In Hyper-V Manager, select it, then either call the context menu, or use the toolbar on the right to open «Options».
In the options window, in the tab «Equipment» will see your existing hard disk for the virtual machine. In the settings of virtual machines generation 2 drive will be in the list of SCSI controllers and the parameters of machines generation 1 – the number of IDE controllers. Do click on the hard drive. To change the drive, in particular, to increase it, click the «edit» button that is located just below the display way to VHDX or VHD file.
Click «Next» in the wizard window changes to disk.
Action selection in our case, the last item Expand. Click «Next».
In the window specify the new size of the disk enter the correct value in gigabytes. Click «Next».
Returning to settings window of the virtual machine will see done with the disk changes. Click the button «Check». In a separate properties window of a disk see the disk size of the virtual machine increased.
But that’s not all.
2. The allocation of disk space within the guest OS
The amount of increased drive of the virtual machine, within the latter will show as Unallocated disk space. This space must be organized or to attach to one of the existing partitions or creating new partition on the disk. For this purpose we use standard tool offering the Windows disk management utility. In Windows 8.1 and 10 for a quick run this utility, you can invoke the context menu on the «start»button.
A universal way of launching the utility in earlier versions of Windows – enter the command «diskmgmt.msc» in field service «Run» (called keys Win+R).
In the disk management window, see actually, as mentioned just above – 50 GB, which in our case was increased VM disk is Unallocated space.
Will fix it. Can create on the basis of this volume of the new partition on the disk. On Unallocated space context menu and select «new simple volume». Then follow the step-by-step wizard.
Another option organize the amount was increased VM disk – adding Unallocated space to the last existing disk partition. To do this, also call the context menu on the Unallocated space and select «Extend volume».
In our case appeared extra 50 GB applies this option. Follow the extend volume wizard.
The size of the allocated space indicate the entire volume to 50 GB.
All our non-system disk partition of the virtual machine has received the entire amount to which the disk has been increased.
