As for Windows 10 to do a «photo viewer» program by default
Testing new features of Windows 10, many users have discovered a small but annoying trouble. It turned out that to view images in popular formats became possible only in the Photos app, while in Windows 8.1, users can choose between «Photos» and «photo viewer». It is this second application seemed to many much more comfortable. In Windows 10 it has, but allows you to access image only formats TIF and TIFF.
Unfortunately, to install this program as the primary tool for viewing the images impossible, as it is simply missing in subsection «default Application». The same applies to dialogue the context menu «Open with». If you open this, you will find there’s only «Photos» and «Paint». Standard tool of «Mapping programs» also does not help you, as viewer, Windows photo, again will only be available in two formats: TIF, and TIFF.
But it doesn’t matter. The situation with the missing function can be quite easy to fix by making small changes in the system registry. To do this, open the registry editor and expand the following branch:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows Photo Viewer/Capabilities/FileAssociations
In the last section you will see two parameters with the same names as those same two formats discussed in the preceding paragraphs. Then create a new value of type REG_SZ (plain string) with the name .jpg and value PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff. Exactly the same parameters as the create formats: bmp, dib, jpe, gif, jfif, jpeg, and png jxr.
After this, open the Settings app and navigate System -> default Applications -> Define default values for the application.
In the left column of the opened window, select the application «photo viewer» Windows, click «Choose defaults for this program»…
…and check that you added through the registry formats.
Save the changes and check the contents of the menu «Open with». If all was done correctly, for added file formats out there you will have the option «View photos Windows.» That’s all. Now you can easily make the program tool image viewer by default.
And again. Those who do not want to mess with the registry, I can recommend a free utility called WinAero Tweaker, but you’ll need the latest version. Run it, prochtite the list of available tweaks to the very end. At the end of the list you’ll find the option «Activate Windows Photo Viewer». Use it and you will get the same result as when you manually edit the registry.
