How to use the built-in Windows 7, 8, or 10 to know that the laptop battery needs replacement
All laptops have one characteristic, regardless of running what operating system they work. We are talking about the problem of the durability of the battery. Yes, there are ways that we can try to get the most of it, but sooner or later the time will come when you will have to replace the battery of your laptop.
Windows 7, 8, and 10 include a powerful energy management system that helps to preserve and extend the life time of the battery. Both these operating systems include a tool called Powercfg that you can analyze your system for common energy-efficiency and problems of Autonomous work. This tool is widely used by manufacturers and developers to create drivers, but nothing prevents you from using it for ordinary users, the more that he gives really useful information, and more importantly, this information can be used to understand, isn’t it time to replace your laptop battery.
To run this tool:
In Windows 7 go to start menu, type cmd, then right click and select «Run as administrator». In Windows 8.x all of the steps are identical, with the only difference that instead of the «start menu» (which is missing in this operating system) you need to open the start screen. In Windows 10, type cmd in the search box on the taskbar.
In the command prompt window, type powercfg -energy and press Enter. This command initiates the analysis of the behavior of the system. The analysis process takes about one minute, and all collected it, the information is stored in the file energy-report.html on the system disk: C:WindowsSystem32energy-report.html
Open the file energy-report.html.
In the diagnostic report energy efficiency you can find very useful information including errors, warnings and informational messages. All this information is related to the energy. However, we are interested in one parameter: «Battery: battery Information». Scroll down the page, it will be almost at the end of the report.
There you will see the two values: «Design capacity» and «Last full charge». The closer the value of the last full charge to the value of the calculated capacity, the better.
After a certain period of time (e.g. one year or two), you will notice that the number of the last complete charge will begin to decline. Essentially it says that the battery gradually «dies». To get a more accurate result, charge laptop battery 100% and then again start the analysis and view the report. If the value of last full charge will be 50% lower compared to the calculated capacity, it probably means that you need to replace the battery.
