How to use OneDrive with a local account in Windows 8.1
Windows 8.1 has built-in support for OneDrive that lets you sync files to the cloud. However, those who prefer a local account can’t use this function, because the integration with OneDrive in Windows 8.1 does not work without a Microsoft account. What’s worse, in Windows 8.1 you cannot install the official desktop app OneDrive, as mentioned above, the integration assumes that it is already built into the operating system. So how to get around this limitation, if for some reason you don’t want to use a Microsoft account on your computer? One convenient solution actually is.
This decision is based on the use of third party tool called syncDriver. It is a small and handy program that helps to overcome the above mentioned limitation, allowing you to use OneDrive with a local account in Windows 8.1.
To configure syncDriver is fairly simple. First of all, you should download and install the program on your computer. After the launch you will be asked to sign in to your OneDrive account. For this you need to specify a username and password. Once the entrance is completed, the display will appear (something like control panel) where you can set up a root folder where files will be synced to OneDrive. To do this, click the «Change root folder» in the left part of the window, and then select the correct folder. For example, in the screenshot below you can see that I connected to the OneDrive folder Windowstips.
Also, syncDriver allows you to connect multiple folders to a single OneDrive account. To do this, click «Link a folder» and follow the simple process. It is worth mentioning that similarly to the official OneDrive, syncDriver automatically downloads files from the cloud or download them there. In addition, file transfer is done through SSL encryption.
Of course, the synchronization behavior can be changed. To do this, the application provides the Options menu, which houses all the settings.
Using syncDriver can be assigned and a custom ROM for your clouds to be displayed in the folder «This computer». To do this go to menu «Options» and on the «General» tab drop-down menu, specify your preferred drive letter and then click «OK».
