How to restore or remove custom folders from «This PC» in Windows 8.1

If you have already installed and are using Windows 8.1, you might notice that the folder «Computer» renamed «This computer» and that Microsoft has added a new section called «Folders» which contain personal user folders («desktop», «Video», «Music», «Images», «Downloads» and «Documents»). Some may find this innovation useful, but most users still prefer to view only the drives and connected devices, and everything else for them is just unnecessary.

Microsoft for some reason did not care about the simple and obvious way to add or remove folders from the new partition, and the only worker at the moment the method is to edit the registry. Below is the list of registry keys, each of which is responsible for displaying a specific folder under «This PC».

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

; Delete the folder «desktop»

; Delete the folder «Documents»

; Remove the «Download»

; Delete the folder «Music»

; Delete the folder «Image»

; Delete the folder «Video»

Because each of you will want to mess with editing the registry, I created two .reg file (remove-folders.reg and add-folders.reg) and Packed them into an archive which you can download here. The launch of the first file will allow you to quickly remove all these folders, and using the second you can, if necessary, quickly to restore them.

If you don’t want to delete all folders, but only some, just right click on remove file-folders.reg, in the context menu select «Edit» and delete the rows for those folders that you want to leave, and don’t forget to save the file to apply the new changes.

Keep in mind that changing the Windows registry settings can cause unexpected problems with your PC, so do at your own risk, and don’t forget to make a system restore point before you start.
