How to quickly and easily recover files, damaged memory card?
Today a very large part of the mass models of digital cameras relies on SD memory cards as the primary means to record photos and videos. The formats in which data is stored on them vary depending on the make and model of the camera, but, as a rule, are based on a similar organizational structure, which, however, is not completely immune from mistakes and failures. That’s why many of the guidelines for the use of manufacturers stress that in order to avoid the risk of damaging the information, the memory card should be removed or installed in the device only when it is turned off.
However, many users ignore this warning and get a bunch of spoiled photographs, and with them the very unpleasant emotions. However, improper handling of SD card is not the only cause of such problems. Not infrequently, the damage occurs when the power of the camera during shooting, and sometimes flash cards fail without any apparent reason. As a result, upon returning home after a holiday, instead of hundreds captured in digital format memories the owner of the camera detects a memory full of unreadable files. Fortunately, all is not lost – the data, it would seem that the memory card can often be restored. Here’s how.
Although the Internet you can find a lot of guidelines for restoring information from damaged SD card, in this text I will proceed from three basic assumptions: you are Windows user, you are not a tech expert and do not have extra time to read and study numerous instructions.
I want to offer you a very quick and easy to use solution – a small but very useful program called ZAR recovery software X Systems. Although the full version is a paid tool, recovery tool (which actually we need) available for free in the demo version.
After downloading and installing the program, make sure that you have enough space on your local disk to save the recovered memory card data. This means that if your card is 16 GB, then you should have about 16 GB of free space on the hard disk of the computer. Also you will need a memory card reader (in other words, card reader) – most modern laptops have a built-in slot.
I do not recommend, if you find that recording on the memory card is corrupted and not recognized correctly, try to copy or rename them manually. Instead, trust the tool. Connect the memory card, then run ZAR X and choose the «Image Recovery» (restore images) – option available in the free version of the app.
In the list of drives, select the corrupted memory card and click «Next».
More all you have to do is be patient and wait for ZAR X will scan the flash drive and retrieve all the records that are being restored.
Upon completion of the analysis file, you will have the ability to selective or complete recovery. For complete recovery with preservation of the file structure, check the boxes «RAW» and «FAT» and click «Next».
Finally, specify the destination folder on the local disk and click «Start copying» button to start the recovery process.
Of course, there is a possibility that not all photos and videos will be saved, but the algorithm that uses X ZAR is surprisingly effective, and the chance to recover 80-90 percent of files is very large.
The memory card you can try to reformat and use again, but only if you are sure that the problem was disposable and is not the result of irreversible damage of the media.
