How to hide shutdown button on the start screen in Windows 8.1 Update
Earlier this week Microsoft officially released the Windows 8.1 Update. In addition to improving performance, this update makes managing apps from the Windows Store using the keyboard and mouse.
Those of you who have already installed this update, you must have noticed that in the upper right corner of the home screen now has a button to control the power to the computer and search. If you click on the «Search» button, the screen will appear the search bar, and clicking on «power Management» reveals all relevant options, including «Hibernate», «hibernate», «shutdown» and «Perezagruzka».
All of the users who started to use Windows 8.1 before you install this update, you probably know that the operating system offers other quick ways to access the power options. For example, you can press the keyboard button with the Windows logo + X and select in the appeared context menu the «shutdown or logoff».
So, if you don’t find a new button useful and are not going to use it for shutdown/restart your PC, you can easily hide it. This can be done in two ways: the first is more complicated and involves editing the Windows registry, the second is much faster and easier, so better go straight to the second because the first method is for those who are not looking for easy ways.
Method 1: Hide the power button using the registry
Step 1: Open the dialog «Run». To do this, it is necessary to press the key combination Win + R.
Step 2: In the Run window, type Regedit and press Enter. If you see the window user account control, click Yes.
Step 3: In the registry editor, navigate to the following key:
Step 4: In the ImmersiveShell, create a new key named Launcher. If this section already exists, just skip this step.
Step 5: Then select the key you created and in the right part of the window registry create a new DWORD (32-bit) with the name Launcher_ShowPowerButtonOnStartScreen. As its values are set to 0. If you ever need to return the power button, change the value by one.
Step 6: That’s all! Now reboot the computer for the changes to take effect.
Method 2: Hide the power button with third party apps
Everything is very simple. Just download the tool ModernUI Tuner from the developer Sergey Tkachenko. Then run it, navigate to the Start Screen, uncheck the Show search button on the Start screen, and then click Apply & Restart Explorer.
