How to fix error «RunDLL – specified module not found» in Windows 8.1
If you get the error «RunDLL – specified module not found» every time you start the Windows 8.1 operating system, which was upgraded from Windows 8, here you can find a solution.
Although a clean installation of modern versions of Windows only takes a few minutes, you will have to spend additional time for installation of all necessary programs.
The main advantage of a clean installation is that during this process, in contrast to the updates within the system is guaranteed not to have any corrupt or incorrect records. Thus, it is obvious that a clean installation of Windows is a better option than upgrade the older version to the newer.
On the official Microsoft support forum, quite often there are messages from users that after updating from Windows 8 to 8.1, you receive the following error message after boot:
An error occurred at startup
Specified module not found.
As you can see in the screenshot above, the message does not contain any error code which might help to understand in what direction to dig. However, users can see up to three such dialogues during the launch of its updated system.
For starters, you can try to run the command SFC /SCANNOW in command prompt running with administrator privileges. If this does not resolve the issue, try the following method, but first create a system restore point – just in case.
1 Download the Autoruns tool from Sysinternals, clicking on the following link. This tool is recommended by themselves it professionals from Microsoft for the analysis of various processes. You can read more about it on TechNet. After downloading, extract the archive using any program to work with compressed files.
2После unzip the downloaded file in the folder «Autoruns», you will see two executable files, namely, «autoruns» and «autorunsc». Start the first one.
3 In the window on the tab «Everything», find the entries highlighted in yellow. All you need to do is to remove individually. To do this, use Ctrl + D or just click the right mouse button on the entry and then select «Delete».
Once all these entries are deleted, close Autoruns and restart your machine. The problem needs to be fixed.
