How to enable Cortana on Windows Phone 8.1 outside the United States
Yesterday Microsoft has released a preview update to the new version of the mobile platform Windows Phone, which can set any owner of a smartphone with WP8. Perhaps one of the most significant features in Windows Phone 8.1 is Cortana, a digital assistant that is very similar to Apple’s Siri. But at this stage Cortana only works among users who live in the United States.
Now the question is: how to activate Cortana if you live outside the US? Actually there is really simple solution to this problem, and it is to change the region and language settings in the phone. So if you have already made the upgrade to WP8.1, and now want to enable Cortana, just follow these steps:
Step 1: Go to the new notification center and tap All settings.
Step 2: In the settings menu, navigate to «Language» and change the default language to English (US).
Step 3: go Back to the General settings menu, press the «Region» as the country/region select United States. Also, make sure that the regional format matches phone language.
Voila! Now Cortana should appear in the applications list. If not, restart the device. Well as access to Cortana can be obtained by clicking on the search button.
Keep in mind that after these steps (change region and language) you may lose some functions that are designed specifically for your country. If you go back with the previous settings, voice assistant will be disabled.
UK and China are next on the list of countries which will start to work Cortana. This will happen at the end of the year. However, Microsoft promises that eventually, Cortana will begin to function in several other regions, but not before 2015.
