How to download Windows 10 ISO for free and legally
Today was the official debut of Windows 10, and with it was released and the official program that will not only legal to download a new operating system, but also to create installation media with it. So if you want to upgrade to Windows 7, 8 or 8.1, or just want to install Windows 10 from scratch, you can do it with this official tool.
You will need:
- Computer with Internet access.
- USB flash drive [recommended option] 8 GB of free space or more. Obviously, it is recommended to use a blank or formatted disk.
- DVD [secondary option]. Requires an optical device with a writable DVD.
To upgrade from an ISO image is possible even on computers that have Windows 7 without SP1 and Windows 8 without the 8.1 update.
The media creation tool can be used to download following editions of Windows 10:
- Windows 10 Pro
- Windows 10 Home
- Home Windows 10 single language
In addition, the tool allows you to upgrade your current Windows installation without actually creating the installation media.
Please note that the program is available in two versions (download link available at the end of the article) – one for 32-bit Windows and one for 64-bit. So make sure you downloaded the version supported by your operating system or the tool just won’t start.
How to create installation media for Windows 10
Connect the flash drive to the computer or insert a blank DVD into your DVD optical disk drive.
Double-click the executable program file. A window will appear with two options – to create the installation media, select the second and click «Next».
In the next step choose the language, edition and architecture of the OS.
Now select the method to save the installation files to a flash drive or in an ISO file, which you can then burn to DVD. Click «Next».
If you chose the option with a USB device, you will be prompted to choose the target removable media. Select it and click Next. (Note: all files on the flash drive will be overwritten and deleted).
Wait until the process of downloading files and creating the installation media, and then click finish.
If you select «ISO file», clicking «Next» you will be prompted to specify a location to save the file. After you download it you can burn to DVD any program that supports burning ISO files such as ImgBurn or CDBurnerXP.
Please note that the Windows 10 upgrade is not possible on computers that are running Windows Vista or Windows XP. They will have to perform a so-called clean install.
