How to download and save Windows updates to a flash drive and then install them on another computer
From time to time Windows notifies us about the presence of important updates through the built-in tool that is named «Windows update». To do this, as you know, the OS needs an active Internet connection.
«Windows update» offers the opportunity to set the boot options and install updates (automatically or manually), but you can’t save the installation packages updates to offline storage, which can be useful to install updates on a computer with a fresh install of Windows, or multiple computers without the need for repeated downloading of the update files on each of them. To our delight, there are such utilities as Portable Update. This is a small portable program that allows you to download and save the update to an external drive. Moreover, this utility can be used to install the downloaded updates to other computers.
Portable Update downloads and stores the updates in a special folder «Cache» which is automatically created on the USB drive. As soon as the updates are copied to this folder, the user can use the built-in Portable Update feature to install the updates on another computer with Windows. Let’s find out how the program works.
To get started, download the archive at the link at the end of this article and extract its contents to portable media. After the file launch PortUp need to download some additional files that are required for the operation of the program. To perform this task, use the «Start» button in the upper right corner of the program.
After downloading the necessary files, the screen will display the app’s main interface, which has multiple tabs «History», «Search», «Download», «Install», «Services», «Settings» and «Log». On the History tab displays the list of already installed updates on your system. The app, apparently, a problem with the encoding, so instead of Russian words in the list of updates is displayed kryakozyabry.
So the first thing you need to do is click on the «Start» button on the tab «Search». So you start the search for updates which are not installed on your system. It may take from several seconds to several minutes depending on the number of updates. Once the search is completed, the Portable Update will show the total number of found updates.
Updates that are found are automatically added to the list on the tab «Search» and will appear in the list with the rest of the updates on the tab «Download». Now the updates need to download. To do this, select the required updates (you can download all or only selected) and click on the «Start» button on the tab «Download». After downloading the update, connect a USB drive with the downloaded update to a computer with the same operating system, run Portable Update, click «Install», select the updates you want to install and click on the «Start»button.
Portable Update works on all versions of Windows from Windows XP and above. By me it is tested on Windows 8 Pro.
