How to create and use a VPN connection in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1
VPN technology (Virtual Private Network — virtual private network) creates a secure connection to another network over the Internet. Virtual private networks can be used to access geo-protected web sites, hide your Internet activity from prying eyes when using public Wi-Fi zones, and more. Most operating systems have built-in VPN support.
What is a VPN and why is it needed
When you connect your computer (or other device such as smartphone or tablet) to a VPN, the computer acts like it is in the same local network as the VPN. All network traffic is sent via a secure connection to the VPN. This allows you to securely access local network resources even from other parts of the world, and to use the Internet as if you were at the location of the VPN.
When you browse the Internet when connected to VPN, your computer communicates with web sites using an encrypted connection. VPN takes your request and sends back a response from the website all through a secure connection. If you use an American VPN to access services that are only available from the USA, these services will think that your connection comes from the United States.
Virtual private networks are often used for remote corporate employees and most importantly secure access to the corporate network, including all of its local resources. In addition, you can use VPN to connect via the Internet to a home network while traveling, for example. It provides remote access to the Windows desktop, including files stored on devices on your local network. Also VPN allows you to hide your Internet activity while using a public Wi-Fi networks.
As mentioned above, VPN is used to access the geo-protected sites, and many people use VPN for downloading via BitTorrent, since some providers to «cut» the incoming rate when downloading files via this Protocol, even when users download completely legal files.
What do I need to connect to a virtual private network
In order to connect to a virtual private network of your company or to your home VPN, you need to know the following information:
- The IP address of the VPN server.
- The connection name and the VPN credentials (user name and password).
You will also need a connection to the Internet as you will not be able to connect to the VPN server, if your computer is not connected to the Internet.
How to create VPN connection in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1
First, you need to open «control Center network and sharing». In this window, click on the link «Create and configure a new connection or network».
On the screen appears «setup a connection or network». Here select «Connect to a workplace» and click «Next».
Next you will see the wizard «Connect to a workplace». You will be prompted to choose a connection type. It is obvious that you must select «Use my Internet connection (VPN)».
Now you need to enter the VPN connection. In the field «Internet Address» enter the IP or domain address. Then you can specify the connection name («destination Name»). Next, select or clear the check boxes in the corresponding fields below. Since VPN is intended to secure connections, I recommend that you remove the check box «Remember my credentials». When you are finished configuring, click on the «Create»button.
A VPN connection will be created in just a few seconds, and then you can see it on the «Network» under «Connection».
How to edit the properties of the VPN connection
Maybe someday you’ll need to change the settings of your VPN connection. For this purpose go to «control Center network and sharing» and click «Change adapter settings» in the left column.
In the opened window with a list of available network connections, right-click the mouse on the newly created VPN connection.
In the context menu click «Properties».
Opens the properties window for the selected VPN. Here you will find several tabs with settings that can be changed.
After making changes remember to click «OK» to have them applied.
How to connect via VPN
Now that you have created and configured a VPN connection, it’s time to connect to it. Open task bar «Network» (by clicking the left mouse button on the network indicator in the notification area on the taskbar).
Under «Connection» choose your VPN connection and click «Connect».
Next, enter the user name and password for the VPN connection and click «OK».
The connection will take a few seconds. When the connection is established, the panel «Network» will disappear automatically.
