How search works in Windows 8.1 and how to use it
The search engine in Windows 8.1 has been completely redesigned. It is so very different from that in Windows 7 and Windows 8 that some users may experience difficulties in understanding how it work. That is why we decided to create a complete guide to search with screenshots and examples.
How to search using the bar «Search»
While on the home screen, simply enter your keyword(s). As soon as you press any letter or number key on the right side of the screen the panel «Search» and display the search results on the basis of what you have entered.
If you want to find something while in desktop mode, simply press Win + s on your keyboard or hover your mouse to the lower right corner of the screen and select «Search». Then you need to enter your search query.
Are the results of the search
First in the list are apps that match the search query, followed by parameters, and then files. Depending on the search query that you enter, you can see only some apps, settings and files. The fact is that in the «Search» is simply not enough space to show them all.
In the search results followed by suggestions based on relevant keywords from the search query. These suggestions provides a search engine Bing. She does it including on the basis of existing user data and your search history.
One important difference between local search results and suggestions based on keywords, is that next to each of the local results, there is always some kind of icon. The proposals of the icons you will ever see.
How to filter search results
In Windows 8 the search results are automatically filtered by category. In Windows 8.1 this is not, but you can easily do it manually.
To filter your search results you need to click on the filter «All» just above the search line. This will open a drop down menu with categories/search filters, including «Everywhere», «Settings», «Files», «web Images» and «Video».
Search filter by default, you are «Everywhere». If you choose «Settings», then the operating system will only display settings link, found in the «control Panel» or in menu «PC Settings».
If you choose «Files» then in the search results you will see only files matching your search query. When you use the two remaining filters («web Images» and «Video»), a «Search» will show you the keywords based on data from Bing for a specific search query.
Experiment with these filters to better understand how they work.
How to use search results
Now let’s consider the principle of the search results. When you perform a search you will have four important elements, with which you can interact:
Filters in the previous section we have already shown how they work.
Search button – allows you to open search results in full screen mode. This window displays local results, and search results in the Internet (Bing).
Search results – clicking on any of them will open the corresponding item.
Suggestions based on keywords – when you click on any of the suggested keywords that will open a fullscreen window with the relevant search results. The search results will include local results, and search results in the Internet (Bing).
As mentioned above, when you click on the search button (or Enter on keyboard) will open a fullscreen window with the search results. The first this window consists of the local results – it can be files, applications and settings.
If you scroll to the right, you will see the results from the Windows Store from the web (websites, images, videos), as well as related search queries.
It is worth noting that the page can scroll indefinitely – Bing constantly loads new search results, so you can find what you are looking for.
Pressing the right mouse button on the search results to open the context menu with options.
If this website, you will be able to copy its link.
In the case of files, the contextual menu allows you to copy the selected file or open its location.
When you right-click in the tab image from the Internet, you will get the option to filter them by various criteria, including size, color and type.
In the case of video, these criteria include the duration and resolution.
In the upper left part of the window always displays a colored rectangle with the current search query.
Clicking on this triangle opens the panel «Search». Thus, you can enter a different keyword and quickly start a new search.
Definitely, search in Windows 8.1 is much more powerful than that in Windows 8. Integration with Bing opens up even more possibilities, and to search for something on the Internet is no longer necessarily the first thing to open the browser – you can find what you are looking for, directly from the start screen. And if the users will appreciate this feature, it can have a positive impact on the market share of Bing.
