In Windows 8 you can encrypt and password protect USB drive without any additional software
Windows comes with BitLocker, which allows you to encrypt and password protect the contents of the media. In Windows 8 this feature is available only in professional and enterprise editions of the operating system. In this article we will talk about how to protect USB drive with BitLocker tools.
Now, open the folder «Computer» and click with the right mouse button on the removable disk. Next, a context menu will appear, where you can select «Turn on BitLocker».
When the wizard starts drive encryption, select the check box next to the option «Use password to unlock the drive».
Enter the password and click «Next».
Now you need to choose where will be saved the recovery key, which is useful in case if you forget the password to the disk. Starting with Windows 8 you can save the key in a Microsoft account – this is the option I chose. However, you can print out your recovery key or save it to a file. Which is better – you decide.
Then you need to choose which part of your drive to encrypt. Again – you decide. Then click «Next».
The next step is just to click on «Start encrypting».
If you connect the encrypted drive to a computer with Windows 8, the screen will display a notification stating that it is protected by BitLocker. Click on this notification.
You will be given a prompt to enter password. Enter it and click «Unblock».
That’s about it. You can now browse the files on the disk and copy files from and to it. This guide is suitable for Windows 7 users.
