Find and change the directory in which Windows 8 by default installs apps from the Windows Store
We got access to the folder, but it is only the first step on the way to our goal. To change the directory to install programs by default, we have to refer to the Windows registry.
Press Win + Q, type Regedit, and press Enter. You will open registry editor where you need to go to the following section:
Now note the parameter name PackageRoot. This is the registry key that is responsible for the directory in which the default installed apps from the Windows Store. The default directory is C:Program FilesWindowsApps.
You can’t just go and change the directory to edit this parameter, first and foremost, you must become the owner of section Appx. To these we now turn.
Right-click the mouse on the Appx folder and on the shortcut menu, click Permissions.
In the Permissions dialog box, click the Advanced button. You should see the following window.
Now make sure that in the permissions entries box, you have selected the subject TrustedInstaller, and then click on the Edit button at the top of the window. In the Selection window: the «User» or «Group», enter your name in the text box and click Check names.
Click OK in this window and the previous one.
Lastly, in Permissions, select the group Administrators check box as in the screenshot below and click OK.
That’s it, from now on you can freely edit the PackageRoot option by clicking the right mouse button and selecting Edit.
After you change directories, you encounter one small problem. Already installed applications will remain in their original location, so when they update you will get an error. But if them to remove, and then reinstall, they will all be automatically installed into a new directory.
