Efficient use of the available memory on a Windows tablet
Limited space for writing data on most tablets is the unpleasant side effect of their super-compact nature or policy of the companies that produce them. And while on Android 16 or 32 GB is a relatively decent amount, then any Windows user will tell you that for the operating system from Microsoft is a little outrageous.
Fortunately, most of these tablets come with Micro SD slot or a USB port (and often both), so you can always add more memory to format a memory card or USB flash drive.
It is, however, associated with additional costs, and it’s not always a perfect solution even memory card or USB drive large space can fill up quickly, if not to be prudent to use this space.
Here are some tips that will help you to get the most out a relatively modest space to store the data in a Windows tablet.
Remove the recovery partition
Any device running Windows 8.1 has a hidden system partition called «Recovery Partition» (or «recovery Partition»). Thanks to him, on your device is always ready to install the copy of Windows 8.1. Thus, if you need to reinstall the operating system, simply select one of the available options (Refresh and Reset) and voila – you do not need to use external media with a pre-written setup files.
This is undoubtedly a very convenient option, but… it «eats» an average of about 6 GB in what is a fairly meager amount of memory for storing files.
Of course, you can easily delete this partition to free up memory, but it is not wise because you will lose valuable functions for fast Windows recovery in case of failure or damage.
It’s best if you just move the hidden Recovery Partition to external media USB-flash drive, for example.
Operation is simple – press the key to call up the initial screen, and then in the search box type «recovery drive» and select «Create a recovery drive» in the search results to open the corresponding tool.
Connect a suitable level of external USB storage device, and in the «recovery Drive» check the box «Copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive». Then just follow the wizard.
After the process is complete, Windows will offer you the option to delete the recovery partition from the internal memory of your device. Voila! About 6 gigabytes of extra free space!
Most mobile devices with Windows 8.1 have the expansion slot for memory card and/or USB port. So if you want to expand the available space without the hassle, simply plug the Micro SD card or USB drive. Fortunately, prices for such accessories are now very affordable.
The disadvantage of this option is that the external memory is typically slower than internal. So external memory is needed it is better to use for storing large files that don’t need high speed read/write, such as photos, movies, music.
Write on external memory
A great way of saving scarce space, we present the memory of the tablet with Windows 8.1 is to configure the system so that it retains your work and other files on external storage (USB or Micro SD). Very suitable for such operation are all the files that Windows usually adds the so-called folder «Library» («Video», «Documents», «Music», «Image»).
To redirect the save path by default, open the application «PC Settings» and navigate to «PC and devices > Devices». Under «save by default» click on «configuration» and simply change the default path for libraries so that it pointed to an external storage device.
Use The Disk Space Tool
«Disk size» is a very useful system tool that Microsoft added with the 8.1 update. It is available inside the app «PC Settings» and allows you to effectively manage the available space, including quickly and easily free up memory from unnecessary files.
Since Windows 8.1 even on your tablet remains the same for Windows, it has a bunch of additional «extra» that they are asking to be removed. Most manufacturers of tablets are always «stuffed» their device with various additional software and trial versions or other software. Of course, they are the first potential candidates for deletion.
Various built-in Wallpapers, demo video or music themes are not essential. In addition, it is good to take for a habit to regularly monitor the status of system folders with temporary files. It is usually located in the C:UsersИмя_ПользователяAppDataLocaltemp. All what you find there, is subject to immediate removal in the system folder are the «corpses» of various temporary and buffer files which by default are «temporary» so that their removal is completely safe.
