Development Continuum for smartphones was launched three years ago
Together with the recent start of sales of new smartphones Lumia 950 and 950 XL was held and the official commercial debut of Windows 10 Mobile. As one of the innovative features of the new version of the mobile OS, the company presents the Continuum function, due to which the smartphone can connect (wirelessly or via a docking station) to an external display and use a generic application in the form in which they are available to us on PC. By the way, the mode Continuum supports only smartphones that meet the hardware requirements, and these at present are the above mentioned Lumia flagships and not yet received in the sale of Jade smartphone Acer Primo.
The idea of Continuum arose exactly three years ago, in the days of Windows Phone 8, when the company thought about how to extend the basic functionality of a smartphone, especially for users in emerging markets where the smartphone is often used as the primary device.
Initially, the project was called «the Wizard and Tin Man» in honor of characters from the fairy tale «the Wizard of Oz.» After several months of testing, the developers decided to turn it into a real product. Of course, such decisions must be coordinated with the various departments, so Continuum was a commercial product only after the approval of Terry Mayerson, head of the division Windows and Devices.
The desire of Microsoft, it is clear that modern smartphones are powerful enough, so why not use their potential to replace desktop PCs in certain applications, especially as the next version of Continuum, according to rumors, will support the work with the desktop software.
How the market will react, whether the Continuum to become a «killer-feature» and the success of Windows 10 Mobile – learn soon. Anyway, the idea is very interesting, although not entirely new.
