4 ways to find the MAC address on a computer running Windows 7, 8.1 and 10
There are times when you need to know the MAC address of your computer c Windows. To help you with this, we will talk about 4 ways that you can use to get this information. Some are fast, while others require a little more action. Read this guide and then choose the method that suits you the most.
Use the command GETMAC in the command prompt
Getmac is a command line tool that will show you the MAC address of all enabled network connections on your machine. To find out the MAC address off the network adapter using Getmac, you must first enable this network adapter.
To use Getmac, start a command prompt. One way to do this is to use the Run dialog, just press + R on the keyboard, and then type cmd and hit Enter to open a command prompt.
At the command prompt, type the command getmac and press Enter. The MAC address of your active network adapters displayed in the column «Physical address».
Use the IPCONFIG command at the command prompt
The ipconfig command is intended to view detailed information about network connections and network adapters installed in the system. To run this command first open a command prompt. One of the ways how to do it, we have mentioned above.
In the command prompt window type the command ipconfig /all and press Enter. The command displays all current TCP/IP network connections, and detailed technical information about each of them. Among all this information to find the MAC address of your network adapter, find the name of the network adapter and note the field «Physical address» as shown in the screenshot below.
Use «control Center network and sharing»
Another way to know the MAC address is more friendly. We are talking about the network control center. Obviously, first you need to open the center. To do this, click the right mouse button on the network connection icon in the notification area and select «control Center network and sharing».
In the opened window, go to the section «View your active networks». There you will see the name of each active connection. Find the row with the name «Connection». This string will be set to Ethernet if you use wired connection, or Wi-Fi with the name of the network if you use wireless connection. Click the link next to the connection, as shown in the screenshot below.
The screen will display a status window of the network adapter. Click on the Details button to open the window «network connection Details».
Here you will see extended information about the current network connection, including IP address, DHCP server, DNS server address and more.
The MAC address is displayed in the line «Physical address».
You can copy all the information displayed in this window using Ctrl + C and paste it wherever you need using Ctrl + V.
Use the command Get-NetAdapter in PowerShell
Finally, the last method of finding the MAC address is to use the command Get-NetAdapter Windows PowerShell.
For those who don’t know how to open PowerShell: press + R, type powershell in the dialog box «Run» and press Enter.
After starting Windows PowerShell, type Get-NetAdapter and press Enter.
This command will show basic information about each of the network adapters. In particular, in column «MacAddress» you’ll see the MAC address.
